59th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Neurological Institute of Colombia in Bogota, Colombia

59th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Neurological Institute of Colombia (FINC) August 16, 2025 Today marks 59 years since the Charter of the Neurological Institute Foundation of Colombia was signed in Bogotá, Colombia, a hospital to treat diseases of the nervous system in Bogotá, Colombia. Happy anniversary to its founder and director Dr. Jaime Gómez González for 20 years of managing this hospital that helped thousands of people and trained many doctors from Colombia and the world. Thank you for the leadership of ONE that shows that a single person can transform their environment and make life better. We appreciate this very important gift to the country! Dr. Jaime Gomez retired from the Neurological Institute in 1987, and after several failed administrations, and the unfortunate Law 100 of the Social Security, the Neurological Institute was closed on October 2, 1996. The building became part of Javeriana University, and this world class institution was turned into classrooms for the students of the University. Sadly, the University did not have the vision to continue the legacy and philanthropy of Dr. Gomez, to further the growth of this important Center, and to provide the needed services for patients suffering from neurological diseases. A positive result, was those physicians in Antioquia with 20/20 vision, started a few years later, the Neurological Institute of Antioquia. Congratulations to the Paisas!

The Neurological Institute of Colombia, in Bogotá had the highest quality equipment, including the first Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT Scan) imported to Colombia by Dr. Gómez. The Institute functioned for 20 years, and 1,000 surgeries of the brain and spine were performed. The Institute, behind Javeriana University was a gift from a citizen who worked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Dr. Gómez sent most of his team to specialize outside the country, so that upon their return they would work at the Institute. The Institute started with a donation of $ 100. This proves that in a country like Colombia, transcendental works in favor of the community can be accomplished.

On August 16, 1966 the Neurological Institute Foundation of Bogota, Colombia was initiated at the residence of Dr. Alberto Lleras Camargo. The act was signed by Doña Berta Puga de Lleras, Luis Buenahora, Abel Cruz Santos, Vicente Davila Tello, Mario Galan Gomez, Dario Hernandez Bautista, Emilio Urrea, and Dr. Jaime Gomez Gonzalez, the only survivor of this illustrious group of founders. We also remember the names of Eduardo Goez Gutierrez, Syndic, and Rafael Montejo, Economic Advisor. .The Neurological Institute of Colombia was built on land of the Javeriana University, adjacent to the San Ignacio Hospital. The purpose was to treat patients who presented diseases of the nervous system, education, and research into diseases of the nervous system. The building was designed by Rafael Serrano, following the designs of the neurological institutes of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bonn, and Hradis Kralova, constructed shortly before. The construction was carried out by the firm Cuellar, Serrano Gomez, with oversight from Nestor Gutierrez Bolivar and brothers. The equipment was acquired through private bidding and awarded to Compagnie General de Radiology, represented in Colombia by Mr. Ettiene Ramos of Equipelectro. The personnel were trained in France with scholarships from the French Government. The nurses and neuroradiology technicians received training in France and in the first neurological nursing course held in Bogotá by Mrs. Patricia Gutierrez de Matiz, a nurse specialized at the Neurological Institute of Montreal. Scholarships were also obtained in Sweden and Great Britain. The Neurological Institute of Colombia fulfilled its obligations in all three areas and was at the forefront conducting epidemiological studies, research on nervous system disorders, and training a cohort of specialists in Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Neurological Nursing who have distinguished themselves. Neurological Nursing that has stood out in Colombia and abroad. It made the resources of the most advanced technology available to patients, introduced Scanning, and treated patients with cerebral cysticercosis, tumors, vascular malformations, significantly reducing the mortality rates of neurosurgery interventions. We conducted neurology courses for general practitioners, international meetings, and formed a difficult-to-replace work team. We began efforts to acquire Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Digital Angiography, and Navigation equipment. The development of Radiosurgery and Surgical Endoscopy also remains pending. Recently, we have been working to prevent congenital malformations of the nervous system in Colombia. The so-called fumigations or sprayings are homonyms used to describe the Chemical and Biological War unleashed against the farmers of Colombia. The book "Lluvias Turbulentas: Las aspersiones contra los campesinos Colombianos"(Turbulent Rains: The aspersions against the Colombian peasants" (Amazon, 2022) discusses the Chemical and Biological Etiology of these malformations, which have increased exponentially in Colombia without anyone knowing the cause. Other diseases treated and researched at the Neurological Institute of Colombia were Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. We also eagerly await research in nanotechnology and the cure for the worst enemy we have, Glioblastoma Multiforme. Comment: We congratulate Dr. Jaime Gómez González, Founder and Director of FINC, on this anniversary of the inauguration of the Neurological Institute of Colombia. This was a project that started with $100 and everyone opposed it. Thanks to Dr. Jaime Gómez's dedication and persistence, the Institute became one of the most advanced institutions in Latin America in the treatment of neurological diseases. 59º Aniversario de la Fundación del Instituto Neurológico de Colombia (FINC) 16 de agosto de 2025 Hoy se cumplen 59 años desde que se firmó el Acta de Fundación del Instituto Neurológico de Colombia en Bogotá, Colombia, un hospital para tratar enfermedades del sistema nervioso en Bogotá, Colombia. ¡Feliz aniversario a su fundador y director, el Dr. Jaime Gómez González, por 20 años de gestión de este hospital que ayudó a miles de personas y formó a muchos médicos de Colombia y del mundo! Agradecemos el liderazgo de UN hombre que demostro que una sola persona puede transformar su entorno y mejorar la vida. ¡Valoramos este regalo tan importante para el país! El Dr. Jaime Gómez se retiró del Instituto Neurológico en 1987, y tras varias administraciones fallidas, y la desafortunada Ley 100 de la Seguridad Social, el Instituto Neurológico cerró sus puertas el 2 de octubre de 1996. El edificio pasó a formar parte de la Universidad Javeriana, y esta institución de clase mundial se transformó en aulas para los estudiantes de la Universidad. Lamentablemente, la Universidad no tuvo la visión de continuar el legado y la filantropía del Dr. Gómez, para fomentar el crecimiento de este importante Centro y proporcionar los servicios necesarios para los pacientes que sufren de enfermedades neurológicas. Un resultado positivo fue que los médicos en Antioquia con visión 20/20, iniciaron unos años más tarde, el Instituto Neurológico de Antioquia. ¡Felicitaciones a los Paisas! El Instituto Neurológico de Colombia, en Bogotá, contaba con el equipo de más alta calidad, incluyendo la primera Resonancia Magnética (RM) y Tomografía Computarizada (TC) importadas a Colombia por el Dr. Gómez. El Instituto funcionó durante 20 años, y se realizaron 1,000 cirugías de cerebro y columna. El Instituto, detrás de la Universidad Javeriana, fue un regalo de un ciudadano que trabajaba 24 horas al día, 7 días a la semana. El Dr. Gómez envió a la mayoría de su equipo a especializarse en el extranjero, para que a su regreso trabajaran en el Instituto. El Instituto comenzó con una donación de $100. Esto demuestra que en un país como Colombia, se pueden llevar a cabo obras trascendentales en favor de la comunidad. El 16 de agosto de 1966 se inició la Fundación Instituto Neurológico de Bogotá, Colombia, en la residencia del Dr. Alberto Lleras Camargo. El Instituto Neurológico de Colombia se construyó en terrenos de la Universidad Javeriana, adyacente al Hospital San Ignacio. El propósito era tratar a pacientes que presentaban enfermedades del sistema nervioso, proveer la educación especializada a los medicos en las areas de neurocirugia y neurologia y enfocarse en la investigación sobre enfermedades del sistema nervioso. El edificio fue diseñado por Rafael Serrano, siguiendo los diseños de los institutos neurológicos de Edimburgo, Glasgow, Bonn y Hradis Kralova, construidos poco antes. La construcción fue llevada a cabo por la firma Cuellar, Serrano Gómez, con supervisión de Nestor Gutiérrez Bolívar y hermanos. El equipo fue adquirido mediante licitación privada y adjudicado a la Compagnie General de Radiology, representada en Colombia por el Sr. Ettiene Ramos de Equipelectro. El personal fue capacitado en Francia con becas del Gobierno Francés. Las enfermeras y los técnicos en neurorradiología recibieron entrenamiento en Francia y en el primer curso de enfermería neurológica realizado en Bogotá por la Sra. Patricia Gutiérrez de Matiz, una enfermera especializada en el Instituto Neurológico de Montreal, Canada. También se obtuvieron becas en Suecia y Gran Bretaña. El Instituto Neurológico de Colombia cumplió con sus obligaciones en las tres áreas y estuvo a la vanguardia realizando estudios epidemiológicos, investigaciones sobre trastornos del sistema nervioso y formando una cohorte de especialistas en Neurología, Neurocirugía y Enfermería Neurológica que se han destacado en diferentes universidades del pais, y del exterior al igual que la Enfermería Neurológica que ha sobresalido en Colombia y en el extranjero. El equipo del Instituto Neurologico puso a disposición de los pacientes los recursos de la tecnología más avanzada, introdujo la exploración, y trató a pacientes con cisticercosis cerebral, tumores, malformaciones vasculares, reduciendo significativamente las tasas de mortalidad de las intervenciones de neurocirugía. Realizaron cursos de neurología para médicos de atención primaria, reuniones internacionales y formaron un equipo de trabajo difícil de reemplazar. Iniciaron esfuerzos para adquirir Resonancia Magnética, Angiografía Digital y equipos para examinacion del cerebro y espina dorsal. El desarrollo de Radiosurgía y la endoscopia quirúrgica también siguen pendientes. Recientemente, el Dr. Gomez ha estado investigando las malformaciones congénitas del sistema nervioso en ninos y adultos en Colombia. Las llamadas fumigaciones o aspersiones son homónimos utilizados para describir la Guerra Química y Biológica desatada contra los campesinos de Colombia. El Dr. Gomez, publico el libro "Lluvias Turbulentas: Las aspersiones contra los campesinos Colombianos" (Amazon, 2022) donde discute la etiología química y biológica de estas malformaciones, que han aumentado exponencialmente en Colombia sin que nadie conozca la causa. Otras enfermedades tratadas e investigadas en el Instituto Neurológico de Colombia fueron la enfermedad de Parkinson, la enfermedad de Alzheimer y la Esclerosis Lateral Amiotrófica. También esperamos con ansias la investigación en nanotecnología y la cura para el peor enemigo que tenemos, el Glioblastoma Multiforme. Este fue un proyecto que comenzó con $100 y todos se opusieron a él. Gracias a la dedicación y perseverancia del Dr. Jaime Gómez, el Instituto se convirtió en una de las instituciones más avanzadas de América Latina en el tratamiento de enfermedades neurológicas.
