Tome el Empire State Building, pongalo en el suelo y añada otros 150 metros. Luego pongalo en el mar. Eso es esencialmente lo que hizo hoy Shell con el lanzamiento del mega buque  Preludio de 1601 pies .

A 600. 000 toneladas y 243 pies de ancho, cuando el Preludio dejó su dique seco en Corea del Sur después de una acumulación de un año de duración, que desbancó el Emma Maersk (1.302 pies), como buque más grande del mundo. Pero llamar este gigante del mar un buque es casi un nombre inapropiado. El Preludio es una instalación flotante de gas natural licuado (FLNG)que se parqueará en la costa de Australia Occidental y se quedará allí para el próximo cuarto de siglo.

Como una planta FLNG, el Preludio maneja todo lo que implica en la captura, el procesamiento y el almacenamiento de gas natural licuado, aspirando el material de las profundidades de la Tierra y refinando 3,9 millones de toneladas cada año antes de descargar sobre los buques más pequeños que lo llevaran a la parte continental.

Take the Empire State Building, lay it on the ground and add another 150 feet. Then put it out to sea. That’s essentially what Shell did today with the launch of the 1,601-foot Prelude mega-ship.

At 600,000 tons and 243 feet wide, when the Prelude left its dry dock in South Korea after a year-long build, it unseated the Emma Maersk (1,302 feet) as the world’s largest ship. But calling it a ship is almost a misnomer. The Prelude is a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility that will be posted off the coast of Western Australia and will stay there for the next quarter-century.

As an FLNG plant, the Prelude handles everything involved in capturing, processing, and storing liquid natural gas, sucking the stuff from deep within the Earth and refining 3.9 million tons each year before it’s offloaded onto smaller ships that bring it back to the mainland
