As published in the Bloomberg news a year ago, 69% of millennials support a socialist candidate for the 2020 elections. As I was wondering about how are they prepared to make this type of choice, it brought memories of my high school days in Colombia, where a required reading was the red book of Karl Marx and Frederick Engels "The Communist Manifesto" of 1848 .
The reading can be misleading, since it talks about the beautiful theory of social equality. The important part of the lesson was the discussion, and the invitation of people who had lived or experienced a communist dictator like Fidel Castro in Cuba, or currently Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela. The truth is that those in power become the new elite, who are the rich and steal from the "new poor". So, be not misled, but inform the youth about what a real socialist or communist government will be like. In the words of wisdom of Mexican comedian Mario Moreno "Cantinflas": It is best to enrich the poor, than to impoverish the rich".
For a great discussion on this topic, check out "The Fever" a performance in March at the Zephyr Theater in Stillwater, MN with a discussion on the topic. The author of the fever is Wallace Shawn you can hear the audiobook in YouTube as well.
